This piece evokes the poetry of Federico García Lorca, particularly his poem "Lola Under the Orange Tree." The woman depicted here is Sarvar, a native of Rasht, a city in northern Iran. Rasht is a place where it’s hard to find a street without an orange or tangerine tree. It is the city of orange blossoms, rice paddies, tea plantations, and vibrant fish markets.
Sarvar has long been resting beneath the fragrant orange blossoms, leaving behind four children, symbolised by the four orange trees in this artwork. The visual composition is deliberately minimalist, as I found no need for excess—it simply is what it is.
